In November 2022, I was diagnosed with stage four inflammatory breast cancer at the age of 28. I was completely caught off guard by this news being a young mother of three children, ages seven, five, and a year and a half. My time with them seemed to be taken away in a single sentence.

Many encounter barriers when trying to schedule an appointment for a mammogram.

On the evening of October 10, New York’s Design, Construction and Real Estate community gathered for SHARE’s 13th annual Pink & Teal Reception. This elegant event, chaired as always by SHARE Board Member Arthur Thomson of Henegan Construction Co., Inc.

I knew it was bad news before I even answered the call. It was a Tuesday afternoon in June and BTS had just announced that they would be going on a “hiatus” - or were they breaking up? Either way, the morning had been filled with random texts and DMs from friends checking on me - was I okay after hearing my favorite K-Pop boy band was breaking up?

“Hello?” I said into the phone, as I sat at my desk in our open plan office.

Right before Christmas 2022, I received the call: “You have cancer.” Suspicious findings on a routine mammogram (not palpable by me, nor any physicians), IDC confirmed via biopsy. Now what? Every woman’s cancer and her body’s response to treatment is different.

“Cancer is not who you are. Your strength and bravery are what defines you.”

I’m Sabrina and am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at the young age of 30 years old, and I am 34 now. I am Arab-American, have three kids, and live in Texas.
